EROSION DANGER
BRIDGE SAFETY JEOPARDISED
NEED FOR PRECAUTIONS
In the course of a discussion on the Main Highway which took place at the Chamber of Commerce meeting held on Mond'ay night, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, expressed fear for the safety of the traffic bridge spanning the Whakatane River. "If we don't get a highway soon we won't get one at all/' he said adding that the river erosion on the distant side of the bridge was serious and threatened to, in the future eat into the highway itself. Continuing, Mr Barry said that for this reason something should be done, and the Chamber of Commerce members as residents of the town were vitally concerned and representations should be l , made to the authorities that the required protective works be done. Other members commented 011 the threat to the main highway and expressed the opinion that protective works were essential. It was decided that the secretary communicate with the District Engineer of thei Public Works Department requesting that the necessary be taken to protcct the bridge Ppiri; erosion*
