There were: few (ires in Whakatane during the year ended March 31, 1941 and none of a serious nature according to the Superintendent's report presented to the annual meeting held this week. Reporting at the annual meeting of the Fire Board, Superintendent F. H. Stewart stated that he had now twelve auxiliary firemen in the Brigade and remarked on their keenness in the work. Fire Board Expenditure. The estimated expenditure for the Whakatane Fire Board's past : year was £540. This year it is to be slightly increased the estimate being £600 made, up as followsr. Government, £50; Whakatane Borough Council, £275; Insurance Companies, £275. And How ! A speaker at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday stated that he had recently read a letter in the "Not that I believ-j that what is stated in letters to the paper is 1 always right,," ho staid. "I certainly hope not!" said the chairman fervently with a glance at local body men present. Not Possible. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting' two members were taking part in a discussion. They do not always agree with; one another, albeit goodnaturedly. One spoke and the other rose to address the chair with "I don't agree with the previous speaker . . The Board notes with satisfaction the continued keenness of the Brigade members and it congratulates the Brigade upon the spontaneous answer to the call of arms in defence of the Empire. S. Shapley). Mutton Birds. A> large flock of mutton birds presented an unusual sight one dav last week when they cams to within a few yards of the beach near the St. Clair baths, Dunedin. They were no doubt following a shoal or fish, audi their whirring wings and the splashes they raised as they swooped down on the water made a pleasant spectacle. A patch of water was almost black with birds' until they moved out to sea agai i in search of more food. Too Many Hedges. Speaking on town bcautification Mr G. Ai. Brabant at Monday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was of the opinion that many of the hedges in the residential' area could be done away with. Me pointed out how attractive dwellings' in-some cities were when hedges, varied in height, size and colour, were absent. The chairman. Mr W. Sullivan,, agreed with him to the extent that such a scheme might keep the mosquitoes away. Businessmen's Add'ress. Mr A. G. Lunn. for many years associated with. the Auckland Chamber of Commerce! and a onetime president of the Dominion Associatedi Chambers of Commerce; Is to visit Whakatane next month and while he- is in this town it is intended to prevail upon him to address a meeting of businessmen. At Monday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce' it was decided to arrange that the visitor address members o,f the Chamber and other members of the public interested on Saturday, May 10. Unclaimed Prizes. There are at the Red Cross shop in the Strand', a number of prizes won but unclaimed and; it is the: intention of the committee! to offer these articles for sale if the owners do not appear shortly. They include : Box of Chocolates (Pat Winter, No. 16); Child's Walking Suit (Mrs E. Davis, No. 14); Baby Set (H. Taylor); Lamp Shade. (P. M. Old, No. 7). There is also awaiting the owner a kit (leather) containing underwear etc. which was found in front of the shop, and a parcel containing books and toysi belongs ing to Mrs Hampton.
