Donations of two guineas were made by the Wh.aka.tane, County Council yesterday to the Whaliatanej branch of the New Zealand Territorial Association and to the iocal Plunket Society. County Rate Collection. Reporting to the County Council meeting yesterday the County Clerli stated that the 1940-41 rate collection, European, was 94.56 per cent as against 92.31 per cent in 1939-40 and the arrears collection European, was 80.38 per cent as against 73.85 per cent. The Native rate' collection 1940-41 was 32.49 per cent as against 26.12 per cent and the total Native rate collection was £2871 14s Id as against '£2059 3s; 4dj for the previous year. Street Name Wanted. At Monday's meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor's suggestion that the extension made to Salonika Street should bear the same name was approved, but when lie, suggested that the new road in Sutherland's block bo. called Achilles Crescent a brief discussion ensued. The Mayor made the suggestion as the work had been commenced about the time, that the Battle of the Plate took place, but agreed with Cr W. Edgecumbe Red Cross. Home Nursing classes were commenced by the Edgecumbe subcentre, of the Red' Cross Society on Monday evening. These classes are to be conducted on each Monday night in the Presbyterian Hall, com* meneing at 7 p.m. Boys' Band. Residents of Whakat'ane will be gjfvcn a treat on Anzac Day when it has been arranged for the Boys' Band to parade. The boys who have shown remarkable prowess in their short months of tuition will be making their first public appearance. Not Much Use. "He doesn't get any extra petrol for the Mayor, so he might' as well be off the committee," jocularly commented His Worship when Mr D. V. Saunders, town clerk, reported that he had resigned from Oil Fuel Advisory Committee. Saunders stated that' he could! not lind the necessary time to attend the meetings.

Auction Sale. A special sale by auction is advertised by Messrs A. J. Canning and Co. Borough Finance. At Monday night's meeting of the Borough. All those interested in the progress of Ohope should make a point of attending the annual general meeting ol' the Ohope Ratepayers' and Progress League to be held at the Captain's Cabin at 8 p.m. tonight. Rubbish Dump. The Borough Council is searching for a new rubbish dump and is considering a portion o<f the mud flats reclaimed ny the Harbour Board. A plan of the suggested area is to be presented to the next meeting by thes town clerk. Ohope Road Sealing. The Borough Council has made representations to the Public Works Department with a view to having the Borough portion of Ohope road tar-sealed, and has received, a reply thiat the application will receive favourable consideration when the funds are available. Most Important. "Swimming is just as important ns learning Latin," stated a member of the Borough Council at Monday's meeting. "More so," replied the Maj'or. The council is keen to find its way clear to provide the school with sufficient water for a learners swimming bath. The bath holds 12,000 gallons and would be required to be filled 20 times each season, that is once weekly. Public Spirit Wanted. "We can appeal to their public spirit—if they have any," said the Mayor at Monday's meeting of the Council when it - was stated that locks were being broken in the men's conveniences. It was stated that N the police had been notified! of the vandalism and were keeping a •'dose watch for offenders. It was pointed out that the locks were badly damaged, were scarce at present and also that on each occasion tli'o cost of repairs amounted to about £1. Pipe Band in Demand. The popularity of the Wbakatane Pipe Band is .demonstrated by the number of requests for its services. The band while seeking to give its utmost support to all deserving causes is finding it most difficult to accede t ! o all dlemands. On Anzac Bay the band: will l not only play at the Wbakatane parade but will depart for Opotiki in the afternoon for a similar ceremony in that town. The monthly Ihgleside tanes place the following Wednesday 30th and on May 3rd and 4th the band parades for the Home Guard rallies at. Opotiki an:l Wliakatane respectively. House Frontages. When the foreman-engineer to the Borough Council stated that Salonika Street house frontages were ready for grass soAving, he suggested that the householders be asked to sow the grass if the council provided the seetd. He stated that one other street, which the council' put down in grass, had not been well kept and it would be better to leave Salonika Street as it was, if the householders did not show much interest. It was decided to appeal to householders to look after theiir frontages and to offer the sieed for use,. Cr A. J. Canning was of the opinion that the people would be only too glad to keep the frontages in order.
