WHAKATANE ABATTOIR
DECISION TO BUILD
TIME CONSIDERED OPPORTUNE
Reporting on the finance committee's decision to recommend' that an abattoir be established, for the Borough, His Worship the Mayor, at Monday night's meeting of the Council stated that it had been considered that the time was now opportune for the establishment of such a service. He stated that the population of the Borough was at present 2,200, and when the figure reached 2,500 the Council would be forced to establish abattoirs.
Continuing he stated that already meat was being supplied) for the Ohope population by local butchers and! also into the county, and thus the population served was well over the two and l i half thousand. In reply to a question, hes stated that it was the that the arrangements. v be immediately. take some
time to finalise before building could actually be commenced.
Cr„ W. Sullivan remarke'd! that the abattoir service would entail no direct charge on ratepayers, being self-supporting and, as far as he could see, would not effect the price of meat. "If the scheme has no disadvantages it must have advantages,"
The Mayor explained that the •charges of killing at the abattoirs were to be covered by the butchers. The facility was not to show either profit or loss, its operation charges T being covered: by the butchers and in the event of a profit shown then the amount would! be credited to the next year.
The recommendation of the Finance Committee was adopted.
