NOTES AND COMMENTS
SMALLEST RIDER C. Sanderson, who is apprenticed to his father, is the smallest rider in Sydncs 7 at present. He is 14 years of age and weighs 4.7. He has the excellent record of tAvo wins and two seconds from four mounts. LAMBOURN WORTH WHILE The Bulandshar colt Lambourn, who won at Hawlce's Bay, raced in classic company earlier in the season. He was unplaced in the New Zealand Derby and Great Northern Derby, but some of his form makes him useful. HORSES FOR COURSES The Wanganui Cup winner Dynasty is a four-year-old gelding by Posterity from Drawl. He is one of Mr G. M. Gurrie's winners who does not descend from Eulogy, Drawl being by Limond from the imported Spearmint mare Drax. Dynasty seems to be partial to the Awapuni course, as he won there twice at the Christmas meeting. THE NIGHT PATROL NO MORE The Night Patrol, who was imported from England by Lord Stradbroke, the Governor of Victoria, recently died in a stall at the Melbourne salej'ards. In all The Night Patrol won £16,000, and he was sold for the stud for 10,000 guineas, later being resold for 1500 guineas. At the age of 23 years he was again to be put up for auction. RACE RUN TWICE F. Johnston, owner of Trevathan, has lodged an appeal against the official placings in a race run on the second day of the Gore Racing Club's meeting. Half the field completed the course from what the starter declared to be a false start, and in this run Trevathan was first past the post. In the next contest Trevathan was unplaced.
THE BEST STAYER Lucrative, in winning the Sydney Cup, proved himself the best stayer of the season, says the Sydney Morning Herald. His time, 3.20%, is the fastest ever made in a Sydney or Melbourne Cup. Lucrative's win in the Cup made him the seventh three-year-old to achieve the St, Leger and Cup double since the Inception of the St. Leger in 1867. A CHANGE OVER A mild sensation was caused in racing circles in Bay when it was learned that trainer W. MeKinnon had been relieved of the responsibility of caring for the Hxinting Song—Golden Opportunity four year-old gelding, Rakanui, who :o brilliantly won the Hawke's Bay Cup. Rakanui's owner, Mr R. J. Jeffares, announced that he intended to train the horse himself. HeKinnon had charge of him for only three months. EXIT SAKA BONA The Trent ham trainer, A. Goodman, had a stroke of really bad luck last Aveek. His promising Gascony tAvo-year-old, Saka Bona, Avith P. Burgess up, was galloping when he collapsed Avitli a fractured bone in a foreleg. He Avas removed for s1 veterinary examination with the hope of saving him, but the examination disclosed a break in tAvo places, and he had to be destroyed. The loss is severe for Goodman,'foi Saka Bona Avas very promising, and looked like ending a long run of "outs" for his trainer, who recently disposed of a half-interest in the cost. A PROMISING CANDIDATE When Little Robin finished a good second to Dynasty in the Wanganui Cup lie carried 61b more than has been allotted him in the Great Autumn Handicap, and his performance should be quite satisfactory to those who have supported him to Avin the big mile and a half race at Riecarton. Little Robin has done a lot of racing this season, having started 28 times for four wins, five seconds and four thirds. He is a six-year-old gelding by Resinous from Little Thrush, by Birfcdale, from the Boniform mare Girl, and, like Dynasty, is a first i'oal.
