CHAMPION ATHLETES
GORDON RICHARD-S C 3
Gordon Richards, leading British ijockoy, is the latest in aj long list of AI sportsmen graded C 3 for militaiy purposes. Darby M.unro and Jimmy Duncan are the only Australians who are in Richards' class for sheer strength in the saddle at the close of a gruelling race. Yet in three medical examinations Army doctors have put Richards in third grade. Richards, who is volunteered for the R.A.F., but alter two examinations was rejected/ He lives abstemiously, keeps an athlete's hours and says he feels fit. Richards earlier in his career developed chest trouble, and „gavc up riding for a season to take a special cure.
Others failing to achieve A 1 grade incluclc Tommy Farr, tlie heavyweight boxer. He has been forced to retire from the R.A.F. owing to eye trouble. The world champion milcr, Sidney Wooderson, was also placed in a low category by military doctors' because of defective sight. Manj' star footballers failed to reach A 1 category because, through damaged knees and muscles, lliey are unable to march. It is pointed out that it is possible for an athlete, by his very expertness and endurance in one direction, to be quite weak in other directions. Many athletes have physical weaknesses which do not a floe t their proficiency in particular games, while others are expert, 'despite lung troubles.
