THEFT RACKET AT DARWIN

Storekeepers and contractors claimed that cargo worth £10,000 which comes into Darwin, North Australia, is lost each year before they can take delivery of it. Each shipment, quantities of building materials, foodstuffs and general merchandise disappear. One contractor complained that he loses 6 per cent of his total imports. Another says he lost 10 per cent of each shipment. Recently 130 cases of beer, out of a large consignment a hotel at Darwin, were missing. 3ome of this material was actually inspected by Customs officials after it had been landed.
