BOOTS SEIZED

AUSTRALIAN SENSATION INFERIOR LEATHER USED Sydney detectives and Federal officers who took possession of 1535 leather half-soles intended for military boots at a Sydney factory later visited Army ordnance stores in Sydney and seized 200 pairs of boots. They are investigating allegations that inferior leather has been used to make some military boots. The leather, it is stated, bears what purports to be tlie Government stamp mark indicating that the leather has been passed as being of the required standard. It is alleged that the stamp marl* on the boots seized, although apparently identical with the Government stamp, was not affixed bv Army examiners. Thousands more pairs of boots will be examined before the investigation is complete. Of Little Use. Detectives said that, if the qualitv of the leather in the boots sent fco Australian troops abroad was similar to that in the boots that had been seized, they would be of little use. Two detectives and two Federal officers have gone to Melbourne to examine boots delivery to Army ordnance stores there. One of the officers said that the. investigations would probably have far-reaching results. The Minister for the Army, Mr Spender, said that a detailed recheek of all hoots in stock in the Army ordnance stores had. been begun, to make sure thai, before any boots were issued to troops, thev conformed to the military specifications in every deta.l.
