MILITARY STATUS

•CLASSIFICATION OF MARRIED 1 MEN With the announcement that married men are shortly to be enrolled for Army service a question has been the subject of no little discussion. With the knowledge general that a man who married after May, 3940, was still classed as single, there has been raised the question -of status of married men with children. It was suggested that a man who "was"-married, but childless at May 1940, but who has now a family would remain in the status as at the last year. That is not so, the status of a family man changes from time to time. For instance a man 4,-who in May 1940 had one child and whose family has since increased, ■automatically transfers to another class. Again, it has been known where anen, who married after the date stipulated by the Government and became family men before being •called up, have been altered in grade and not called for service. This is not general, however. The •Government of course does not wish to disencourage reproduction and naturally does not wish to have more expensive soldiers .-avoid. A soldier with severa|Mbi.ldren is a bigger expense State than one who has only one • child.
