Mr and Mrs J. Patterson, of Whakatane, left on Monday to spend a short holiday in Wellington. Mr L. A. Partridge, of the Union Bank staff, is on annual leave and left for Wellington on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Capewell, of Te Aroha, wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Maisie Joanne, to Owen Victor, third son of Mi* and Mrs Roulston, of Whakatane. Mr C, N. Taylor, who for the past 11 years was. attached to the staff of the local branch of the Union Bank of Australia Ltd., left on Saturday to take up duty in the Inspectors' Department, Wellington. At yesterday's meeting of the County Council it was decided that with the concurrence of the Land Drainage Department Mr A. O. Stewart's appointment as Native Rate Collector be extended for a further year. "Before commencing business at the Chamber of Commerce meeting held on Monday night, the president, Mr W. Sullivan, referred to the great loss suffered by the Chamber by the death of the late. Mr Geo* Rand. "He was not only a first rate member of the Chamber of Commerce, but also an - excellent citizen," Sullivan, adding that Mr Ran 4 had always been ready-to assist with any move for the betterment of the town. As a mark of respect the meeting stood in silence.
