On Friday a street appeal was made by the local branch of the Plunket Society and that the public realises the great value 9f the work handled by this organisation was shown when the result of the effort was announced as £27 collected. This Week's Ingleside. No doubt the Winter Show Building will attract many people both young and old on Friday next when the Caledonian Society will hold its Ingleside for March. The usual bright programme will be arranged and the Pipe Band" will be in attendance. Enthusiastic Guardsmen. When a meeting of Company Commanders of Home, Guard units pf the Whakatane area was held on Friday night i.t was found that every person who had received an invitation to attend the meeting had put in an appearance, and this evidence of enthusiasm was the subject of favourable comment by the ActingArea Commander, Captain C. R. Wilson.

W.W.S.A. A public meeting of ladies is being held to-night in the King Street Hall in. connection with the Women's War Service Auxiliary, County Affairs. The Whakatane County Council meets to-morrow when in addition to the usual routine business one of the special matters for discussion is to be the suggested road at Ohopc Beach. Petrol Rationing ? A farmer of the district called at. the BEACON office last week. He was a little "sore" to think that he was made to take very great care and even go short of the amount of petrol he could justly use in his farming work, but yet had a case of wastage by the Government itself brought home to him very definitely. A truck load of manure had been delivered first to Otakiri, thence to Onepu and then apparently the State changed its mind as to where it wanted the load and gaVe it another little ride back to McLean's Road. The distance the little iaunt covered was 25 miles.

Race Followers. Whakatane was well represented at the first day of the Bay of Plenty Racing Club's meeting held at Tailranga on Saturday. Week-end Weather. Once more the weather was generous and although beneficial rain fell throughout the week the conditions were bright and warm on Saturday, to allow followers of summer sports to enjoy their usual games. However the rain resumed on Sunday falling steadily throughout the night and the morning to clear slightly in the afternoon. St. John Awards. j Certificates gained by members of the local St. John Ambulance Brigade are to be presented to the successful trainees to-morrow evening. The ceremony is to take place at 7.30 p.m. at <he County Council Chambers. Change of Seasons. Heralding the cooler months advertisements are appearing calling together followers of Rugby ball, and the first club to move is that of Taneatua which holds its annual meeting to-night. That tlia sounds of a ball being punted about are not far away was also indicated when on Friday boys of the local school were seen marking the touchlines at the Domain playing area. Riding on Paths. It will happen any time now. Although the Borough area is big some cyclist is going to meet the law one day when riding on the footpath and then a few more "bob" will go to the countrj T 's coffers, Not content with riding on the footpaths distant from the business area it is at least one sweet young thing, thinks the footway along the Strand is a cycle track, and has been thinking so for a long, long time. House-Hunting. There has been a "general post" in the town lately. With ten State houses allocated many moves have been made with the lucky ones taking over their new homes and others "in the know" graduating to more attractive dwellings. An thus after many mov6s the "apprentice" at the modern art of house-hunting has a chance of getting a place to live. Some have been lucky—others ; have not and are still on the waiting list.
