ROAD RATES
Sir, —It is a good sign of the times that rates and their tendency to farmer are coming to light. counties of New Zealand have been burdened with road rates ■ and to a lesser extent hospital anil harbour rates for long enough. The unfairness is enhanced when 10 per cent is added to those unfortunates who through adverse circumstances are unable to pay those rates. , which should be paid through the Consolidated Funds. I -would asjc the councils what valuation they put on roads and plants as tlis roads and plant do not show as an asset against moneys borrowed for expenditure on those roads.. This being the case why should the farmer t pay the extra 10 per cent imposed on him for default and also lose his franchise at the County polls. Roads: being public property. Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW- .
