WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

EDGECUMBE, ANNUAL MEETING The Edgecumbe Women's Institute's annual meeting was held on Tuesday, March 18 in the Presbyterian Hall. Mrs Learning President, presided and there was' a good attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship. Mrs V. Stewart, V.0., was welcomed by the president. The annual report was read by the secretary. This showed a good year's work achieved under difficult conditions. Mrs G. Irving in seconding the adoption of the report, complimented the President on the interesting and friendly meetings which had been enjoyed throughout the year. Donations had been made to the Maori Fund, the War Purposes Fund and the Leper Fund, besides generous support to the local Patriotic Fund in the supply of produce and goods for sale at the Patriotic Shop. Quantities of knitted comforts for the troops had been contributed throughout the year besides soldiers' parcels and a collection of garments for the Lady Galwajr Guild. Nearly £10 worth of basket ware lias been sold for the Blind Institute. Mrs Learning thanked the committee and all members for .their loyal co-operation ind support which had made her office a very pleasant one to hold. The committee for the ensuing year was elected as follows : President; Mrs Learning (re-elected unanimously); Committee;. Mesdames Poole, Hodson, Crang, Fowell„ L.; '.Wilson,. Pepperell; Brady Anderson, and. List. Mrsi Stewart, Voluntary Organiser, eompl invented members on • a successful year and reminded, them that it was the effort of every single member that counted in Institute work and urged members to all take some part, however small, in every meeting. Mrs Stewart gave helpful advice on many matters and suggestions for smooth running of meetings. In response to requests from many members Mrs Stewart kindly consented to give an. all-day demonstration ir. various arts and crafts at a date, to be arranged.

Mrs Stewart was heartily thanked for her helpful talk.

The business of the afternoon continued with the jn-esentation to mothers of bank books for Baby List and Baby Thomson.

A demonstration of Italian Quilting Avas given by Mrs SteAvart and folloAved with keen interest by .all members.

Afternoon tea Avas served by the committee and the meeting coneluded Avith the singing of the Na. tional Anthem.

MATATA MEETING The annual meeting of the Matata Women's Institute was, held in the Presbyterian Hall on Wednesday, March 17 at 2 p.m. Mrs CaverliUl presided over a good attendance of members and A'isitors, The meeting opened Avith the singing of "Ode to Friendship" folloAved by the leading of the Aspirations. Officers for the ensuing year Avere elected as folloAvs :—President: .Mrs Magee; Secretary: Miss Burt; Treasurer: Mrs H. Withy. Delegates to the annual federation meeting to be held in Whaka-< tane on April 16 were appointed, these being Mrs H. Withy and Mrs; Smith. Mrs SteAA'art, V.0.. of Whakatanc, then addressed the meeting, and also gave a demonstration cn Italian Quilting. Motto : Many a cloud of midnight black. Has morning glory on its back. Competitions resulted: Scones: Mrs Magee and Mrs CaA r erhill tied for 1. Best Flo Aver : Mrs H. Withy 1 and 2. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames H. D. Wilson and R. Withy and the meeting closed AA'itli' the National Anthem.
