A THOUSAND COPPERS
MAORIS' FIND
LARGE BANK DEPOSIT A local bank teller is seriouslyconsidering adopting bowyangs for work—and what is more he is not joining the P.W.D., but continuing to handle that filthy lucre and drop a "quid" on the counter occasionally. The idea came to him last week when he was digging the soil from his fingerncils after an encounter with .some one thousand pennies. Yes! just the thou and if you don't believe v.s count 'em. (The teller -would just gloat to watch someone else do the counting). The encounter which caused him. to adopt a manual outlook occurred last week when placidly fiddling with a pen, totting up figures and making every total an overdraft, he raised his head to espy two Maoris approaching, staggering under the load of a sack. Probably later they would be stagegring under a load of other than a sack as_ the occasion was one justty calling;, for a celebration. They dumped the sack and emp-* tied out the pennies . . . nearly a' fiver's worth oi pennies and all showing the signs of having beer, literally unearthed from somewhere. Well, peeling off his coal., and rolling his sleeves the officerdid the job of accepting" legal ten— der. It took him some time, a great deal of self-control, and later a great deal of soap, and although he if often called "Amy,"- judging btf what he said, he's no lady!
