Local Bodies Picnic. The annual picnic of local body members of the Whakatane district is to be held to-day, when a launch trip will be made to Whale Island. Plunket Benefit. At the meeUng of the Borough Council held on Monday permission was granted the local branch of the Plunket Society to hold a street collection on Friday, March 21. Winter Show Preparations. As usual the Borough Council has granted the Winter Show Association's request for the assistance of the borough staff in the preparations for the forthcoming Show. State House Allocation. Some residents of Whakatane are going to be pleased to-day—others are not. The Inspector of State Houses from Tauranga is due this morning to allocate a number of new dwellings. Rubbish on Waterfront. When a letter was received at last night's Borough Council meeting from the Harbour Board stating that the necessary action had been taken to ensure that refuse was not deposited on the waterfront, the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) expressed the opinion that the position had improved. Flower Show Awards. At the flower show held recently by the Waimana-Nukuhou Women's Institute in the Children's Section Barry Stevenson was placed first for a buttonhole. For Brown Betty Vesey Fleming was first, Bany Stevenson second and Ramon <Bell third. The cup presented by Mir F. Savage was won by Mrs G. Hewitt for the third time. Farewelling of Troops. "I was very disappointed with the manner in which troops were farewelled at the railway station on Saturday," stated a local resident this week. "What a pity some sort of band—even a few instruments— could not have been present, and what a pit}' the crowd was so undemonstrative. I do not believe in being over demonstrative but really it took the crowd, all its time to raise a cheer for the lads." Whakatane Advertising. It pays to advertise—and the Borough Council realises it. Therefore in circulation next month will be a pamphlet issued by the Auckland Automobile Association with an article describing the attractions of Whakatane. The information for this article was gathered and written by Mr D. V. Saunders, town clerk, and will no doubt prove to j attract greater numbers of visitors to this part of the Bay.
Municipal Conference. Last week His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) and the Town Clerk (Mir D. V. Saunders) visited Auckland to attend the Municipal Association's Conference. While in Auckland Mr Barry had the pleasure of visiting H.M.S. Tamaki where, lie states, rapid and efficient training is being given naval ratings. The base is passing out each month large numbers of new recruits with a solid knowledge of naval training. A Busy Nigrht. Last night's monthly meeting of the Borough Council was a larger one than is usual t continuing until 11 p.m. and was one of particular interest, the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) at the conclusion of routine business giving a most interesting account of the Municipal Conference which took place at Auckland last week. A wealth of information can be gained at these conferences and a great deal of information which will benefit the progress of Whakatane was gathered and ably conveyed to the councillors by Mr Barry.
Town Finance. Accounts totalling £2088 17s 11(1 were passed for payment at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Counc : l. PetrQl Price. From Monday last the reseller? price for petrol lias been reduced by one half-penny, all grades in Whakatane now being 2/9. Thornton School Picnic. The Thornton School picnic was held at the Thornton Beach Domain on Friday. Races for the children, boating and bathing on the river Avere the order of the day. Art Union Prize. Second prize in the Grand Art Union in aid of the All Purposes Patriotic Appeal drawn on Friday at Auckland was won by a local resident, Mr W. G. Goodman. His prize was a piano valued at £100. Territorial Bivouac.
The local territorial unit was to hold a bivouac at the week-end, but-Captain J. W. Wilson notifies that this has been cancelled and that a parade will be held on the Domain on Sunday at 0930 hours (9.30 a.m.) Use of Roofing Iron. The local Borough Council has had instructions that no building permits arc to be issued where the plans include the use of the roofing iron. If no substitutes arc available then application must be made to the Government for permission. Donation to Patriotic Funds. According to a letter from the Power Boards and Supply Authorities Association there was a surplus of funds in connection with the Centennial exhibit, the Whakatane share of which was £1 lis. This small amount has been donated to the Patriotic Funds. Building Permits. "The figures this month do not make it appear that we need worry about roofing iron," remarked a Borough Councillor when noting that permits issued during the month were only for a garage and one for a tool shed—a total value of £65. Damage Repaired. / When the electrical engineer (Mr F. W. Lysaght) reported to Monday's meeting of the Borough Council that OAving to a motor accident it had been necessary to replace two poles and 800 yards of cable, the Mayor explained that the person whg had caused the damage had admitted liability and agreed to pay for the replacements. Untidy Hedges. The foreman .of the Borough Council is about to inspect the residential area with a view to having overhanging hedges cut back by householders and also will institute the annual of dogs for which licenses have not been obtained. The Works Committee has decided to circularise occupiers of dwellings requesting that their street frontages be tidied and kept neat.
