ARMY DEFAULTERS
MEN CALLED UP PENALTIES FOR NEGLECT, Those men who, after being called up in the first and second Territorial ballots, have not taken steps to fulfil their, military obligations, are to be reminded by Gazette notice last iveek of their duty. Had they reported when requested they would/. have been in camp at present, as the ballots were gazetted on October 6 and November 2. The number of defaulters is 105. The procedure which will be followed with there men avlio have failed to report for medical examination, notice to attend which was given by letter, is provided for under the regulations, which state that every man called up may be required by any authorised officer, by notice in the Gazette, to report at any time and place notified. If he fails tc do so (sickncss or other unavoidable impediment excepted) he may be tried and punished for the qf-t fence of desertion or of absenting himself without leave, as the case may be. Sickness or other invgediment is no defence unless it was notified by letter before or as soon as possible after the time required to report. Conscientious objectors and others whose appeals have been dismissed are in a similar position.
