Mr and Mrs T. H. Berry, of Gisborne, Mrs J. Howat and her son Tan of Martinborough, and Mr M. Howat and his son Hugh, of Pahiattia, have been the guests of Mr and Mrs W. G. Howat of Whakatane. A pleasant function took place on Saturday afternoon when the chairman of directors and staff members of the BEACON gathered to bid farewell to three ex-members of the staff who are on leave with the reinforcements, namely Corporal R. 0. Stewart, and Privates H. L. Heatley and H. Thorburn. Mr F. Reynolds, chairman of directors, and Mr C. King-sley-Smith, manager, were the chief speakers, while other members of the staff and the chairman of the County Council, Mr J. L. Burnett, and the chairman of directors of the Rangitaiki Dairy Company, Mr W. A. McCracken, who were informally in attendance, also paid tribute to the men. Following a short toast list each of the guests of honour was presented with a wallet. A' pleasing innovation was the introduction of a toast to th 3 "Soldiers Mothers" during the proposing of which special mention was made of Mrs Stewrt, who was present.
