LONDON ORES SHOW
SCENE OF PRE-WAR ELEGANCE London is holding out bravely on the fashion front. "Frocks for Aeroplanes" is the slogan, and Norman HartnelPs mid-season dress show for American buyers presented a scene of pre-war elegance. The buyers turned up in full strength all very smartly dressed. Tlie only wartime touches were the tin hat carried by a guest and the wail of the siren while the show was in progress. I Now fashions avoid exaggeration, but points to bear in mind are the still shorter skirt which was shown in two styles: one straight and very narrow, and the other all-round knife pleated, with pleats stitched flat to the hips and then allowed to swing free. Embroidered Necklaces. Several afternoon frocks had necklaces ahd bracelets embroidered on them in beads and metal thread, especially effective in black and gold.Dinner frocks ol lightweight wool were very elegant, flame and turquoise being specially favoured. These are usualty sleek fitting, some times long, but others short for restaurant wear. Looking ahead, you will find one of the most popular woollen fabrics is jersey. This comes in so many weights that it suits all seasons. It hangs softly and drapes superbly, and is equally successful when used for country town frocks.
The colours range from delicate pastel shades tc- rich deep purple and reds, and colour is often the determining factor in creating individual style. A strip of the same jersey makes the all-popular and sophisticated turban, which seems to suit so many types of women and occasions. HOUSEHOLD HINTS Put breadcrumbe tied in muslin, about the size of an egg, with cabbage. Cabbage cooked in this way is easily digested, and the breadcrumbs absorb almost all the smell of the cabbage while cooking. A pinch of bicarbonate of soda added when stewing fruit saves sugar.
