SCHOOL COMPETITIONS

The swimming .sports of the Secondary Department, held on Friday, 21st February, proved very successful. In all events, the entries were very good and the championship events were closely contested. The champion girl swimmer, Pixie Appleby, who gained eighteen points defeated Betty Boswell by two points In the boy's championship, equal points were gained by Gartshore and Moore. RAGING NOTES COMING MEETINGS PAEROA AND TAURANGA The Oliinemuri Cup, of £600, and the Shaw Handicap, of £400,, will be the principal events at the Ohincmuri Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, to be held at Paeroa on March 15 and 17. The St. Patrick's Handicap, and Paeroa Handicap, each of £300, will be the sprint features, and the Hikutaja Hack Cup, of £300, will be run on the second day. Jumpers arc well catered for with a steeplechase and a hurdle race each day. The Bay of Plenty Racing Club's Autumn Meeting will be held at Tauranga on 'March 22 and 24. The chief events on the first day will be thei Tauranga Cup, of £450, and the Flying Handicap, of £225. The Herries Memorial Handicap, of £350, Railway Handicap, of £225* and Matakana Hack Cup, of £20()„ will be run on the second day. A liurdle race is included in the card each day. Entries are due on March and handicaps lor the first day will be declared after the second day ;>.i Paeroa. INCREASED STAKES AUCKLAND RACING CLUB An increase cf prize money is featured in the programmes of the autumn and winter meetings of the Auckland Racing Club. The Easter Handicap, principal eJvent of the autumn meeting, to be held on April 12 and 14, carries £1500, an increase of £250 on last year's figure. The President's Handicap has been raised from £450 \to £600, the H. O. Nolan Handicap from £650 to £750, Huia Handicap from £500 to £600, and Islington Handicap from £400 to £500.

For the winter meeting, to be held on June 2, 4 and 7, the Great Northern Hurdles has a stake of £1750. against £1500 last year, while the stake for the Great Northern Steeples, £2000, remains the same. The Cornwall Handicap has been raised from £000 to £750, and the Remuera Hurdles from £500 to £650. Several other races show an increase of £50.

A DOUBLE WINNER Bronze Bird, who accounted for two races at the Rotorua fixture, is by Bronze Eagle from Catbird, a full sister to Prince Acre. IMPROVING One of the improving sprinters at Ellerslie is Aero King. As he races well on a damp track he may win races during the aututtin months. SALE OF THOROUGHBREDS At an auction sale of thoroughbreds at C'laudelands, conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co, La Femme Noir by Lucullus—Demoiselle, was purchased at llOgns by Messrs F. J. Savage and Son, of, Waimana, who also secured Starmint by Catmint —Mona Bruce at 32gns. THE NICHOLSON-DAVIS TEAM. W« Hawthorne, late of Melbourne, where for yea vs. he trained teams for Mr W. R. Kemball„ has taken over the Takanini horses owned by the successful partnership, Mr Oj Nicholson and the Hon Elliot Davis. The team at present comprises Queen City, Heroic Star„ Foxola, River Plate and Agricola.

SHOWN GOOD PROMISE Trevi, the Pantheon-—Goorabul 21-year-old previously trained at Trentham by H. 13. Lorigan, was taken to Levin by this trainer, but it is understood that he will join L. G. Morris' stable in the near future. This colt has shown good promise in his few essays to date* and when he becomes properly experienced he should pay his way. WELL RELATED F. Christmas has broken in at Riccarton a two year old by Myosotis from Distrait, and the gelding, who is well grown, is now a daily visitor to the tracks. Distrait is by Di acq lie nod from .-Lovelorn, so she is a sister to Manetho and a halfsister to Nones, Menelaus and Prince Paladin, three good performers, also to several marcs who have produced seme big winners, B,eau Vite and Old Bill being two members of tlie family who have been in the limelight lately.
