POPULAR SHOW FIXTURE
WIDESPREAD PUBLIC INTEREST
CONDITIONS EFFECT ENTRIES
All roads led to the Whakatane Show Grounds last Wednesday "when the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Agricultural and Pastoral Society held its thirty-third annual show. Public support was stronger than ever, bearing out the general opinion that the Society this year had won. the fullest sympathy from residents for the manner in which it was carrying on in spite of the difficult times and the labour problems confronting the man on the land. As a result of} this the gate takings were substantially up realising no less than £235. This figure for a one-day show is phenomenal. Though entries were down on past years the standard was; particularly high and won the commendation of the judges in the respective sections.
Crowdls Round the Ring. The ring events as usual attracted "the greatest public attention, the hunting being particularly popular -~and proyidingsome spectacular entries. Injp|pcspcct the Judge, Mr H. Dods (Gnsibovne) had the greatest jjraise for the splendid type fo hurdlers which were entered. The riders •on the main were much younger than usual, he said, due no doubt to the absence of so many young men away, but the riding on the whole --was excellent. Ho too, offered bis congratulations to the Society for "maintaining the show. Stock Exhibits. Class was also represented in the • dairy stock, where as usual the Jer- ■ seys were well to the fore 1 . The standard was high, the tops in all sections revealing magnificent animals which would have done credit to any exhibition in the country.; Unlortunately the dairy stock was confined. almost entirely to well known breeders on the Plains, the individual farmers being conspicuous bj their absence. However those entered were a splendid advertisement foi the district and made a fine display in the Grand Parade. The Calf Clubs were also strongly represented. The pigs presented another gratifying section, the class and standard drawing the highest praise from the judge, Mr R. Hansen of Palmerston North. The strongest exhibitor wis Mr Strugnell, who was closclj\ followed by the Rangitaiki Dairy Co. and the Ruatoki Pig Club for second honours. It is cbvious from the entries that pig-breeding is being ta-t- ---• en more seriously by Eastern Bay ol Plenty farmers and that the fount a tions for a new and flourishing industry are in the process of being Sheep were weak, but a pleasing feature was the substantial poultry section, sponsored by the local clu >. The birds were in fine condition aiu. -drew much attention. The Grand Parade which took place shortly alter 2 p.m. though not as long as u.mal made an imposing sight and was assisted materially by the running comment by the announcer; Mr R. Oxenham.
Home Industries. Though entries in the shed were maintained, these could be built up, .and substantially improved. Competition was confined in most instances to two or three in a class. From the judges remarks we gather that there was nothing lacking far as standard was concerned out that entries were disappointing. The horticultural benchcs were ■ also meagre, but there were some splendid maize stalks, which we consider could only have been grown in the Bay of Plenty. Fruit and produce were poor, though coolie iv showed an improvement. The school entries were as usual strong, and created much interest. Side Shoves and Trade Displays. In of transport, the sufeshow alley! was apparently just as large and as popular as ever. Under the shade of the tall gum trees it made pleasant recreation for those with an eye to a Uttle fun and a few smplus coins. The trade displays found the local "business men well to the fore. Agi'i" cultural machinery, milking machines and farm equipment were on -display. There was a notable absence of car stands which does not .require much thought to understand. Commendation. The BEACON adds its own congratulations to those responsible for the promotion of the show. No one -•appreciatrs more than the. hard--vvorking secretary the innumerable duties i-ntailed, in organist $ the small or my of officials, .a < ■> =and workers necessary for > sue-

WHAKATANE AND RANGITAIKI A. & P. SOCIETY
cessful running ci the exhibition, ancl to Mr G. R. Kent must go the credit for overcoming present day difficulties and staging an event of which the whole district may be proud. In this connection we couple with him the president, Mr R. Ruddiclc, and the members of his committee whose public-spiritedness has been so well rewarded. We take this opportunity of echoing the sentiments of show patrons generally, that the Society will continue with the 'good work' and as the time approaches, promote and run for the benefit of the district its annual Summer Show and stock exhibition.
