INCIPIENT FIRE

YESTERDAY'S ALARM The Whakatane Fire Brigade received a call to Mr Whittle's Cycle Works in the Strand at about 4.15 p.m. yesterday, but although smartly on the scene its assistance was not required owing to the flamei having been subdued by the use of an extinguisher and buckets. The fire broke out in a small galvanised iron shed at the rear of the workshop, in which used motor cycles were stored, and before the flames were extinguished considerable damage was done to tyres, seats and paint work. Mr Whittle yesterday could not account for the outbreak and stated that he had smelt fire some 10 or 15 minutes previously, but had believed! some business person to be burning rubbish at the rear of his premises and until the smell of burning rubber became very strong did not take any notice.
