RAGING NOTES TO BE TRIED AS HURDLERS A fit* r a number of failures on the flat, Yaalsstar is lo be given an opportunity to maUo good, as a jumper. He had several lessons over the pony fences at Ellerslie last v.'eck, and judged by the v.ay lie shaped, he impresses as one likely to make good in this department. Hot Shot is being indulged in a course of schooling, and his displays to date dearly indicate that he possc&ses natural ability as a jumper. Hot Shot has had a good deal of racing on the flat and should not require much experience, before he is ready to take part in hurdle events.

BEEN SCHOOLING WELL Night Hawk has been schooling well at Ellerslic and lie should make a good showing in his engagements at the Waikato meeting. At Whangarei, in his first effort, lie ran third to Master Appellant and Fleur d'Or, and in his next, outing occupied a similar place to Boy Lu and Son of the Soil in tlio Orewa Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters at Ellerslie. HAS SOME PACE Laughing Fox showed a good deal of speed in the Waimangu Stakes, six furlongs, at Rotorua on Saturday, in which he finished first, but lost that place on a protest for interference. Laughing Fox is engaged in the Trial Stakes at Te Rapa on Saturday and he should again be hard to dispose of. RACED WELL Augment, who scored over a mile and 160 yards at Rotorua on Monday, has been paid up for in the Puketaha Handicap, one mile, at Te Rapa on Saturday. Augment has performed well this season. He won the Aylesbury Handicap, six furlongs, and was third in the Longbeach Handicap seven furlongs, at the last Grand National meeting, and later at the Wellington spring meeting he took the Tararua Handicap, seven furlongs. Returning to Riccarton in November Augment was third in the Linwood Handicap, seven furlongs, and the Otaio Plate, one mile and a quarter. At the recent Wellington fixture lie was second in the Ruapehu Handicap to Circular Note and. won the Melrose Handicap, seven furlongs, while at Pahiatua he was also successful over the same distance. MAY DO BETTER Colonel Rouge ran right up to his good track form, at the Tapanui meeting and notched an easy win in the President's Handicap after losing several lengths at the start. He ran another good racc'in the Stewards' Handicap and would have won had he got a clear run in the straight. The Colonel Cygnus gelding his disappointed on several occasions, but now that lie has struck winning form again he may go on to much better things.

TRANSMITTER MAKES GOOD TRACK SPELL REPRODUCEDTwo year old honours arc constantly changing as fresh, horses come on the scene, or as those that have raced earlier in the season reach real racing pitch. Transmitter, a Vanls-—Telepathy colt, is one of the latter. Until a few yards off the post it appeared on the second day of the Auckland meeting that he was to repeat his first day success at the Ellerslie meeting. He had overhauled Kronos, but the latter came again to get the verdict, hall' a head. Miss K. Morrison, owner of the colt, lias taken a keen interest in racing for a number of years, but only from • the spectacular side. About a year ago she decided that she would like to see her own_cokmrs carried, and her choice fell on the Vaals yearling. She gave him to PI. ("'Paddy") Eva to train at Avondale. and that monitor was proud of his charge—considered he had something regally good. ' Transmitter quickly showed that he could gallop fast, and not a few jockeys bespoke the riding, having made up their minds that here was a youngster that would win early in the season. It was. even thought that the colt might succeed in early classics. Despite good, track efforts, however, Transmitter had several starts without running into a place, and there is little doubt that minor setbacks during his training had a lot to do with this.
