TURF TOPICS

DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP The New Zealand Racing Conference has allotted the Duke of Gloucester Cup to the Wanganui Jockey Club for the 1941-42 season. This trophy was given by the Duke on his visit to New Zealand and is for competition among amateur riders. This season it will be competed for at Washdyke. PERFORMED WELL ON COAST Native Song must rank as one of the champions of the East Coast, for another couple of races went to his credit at the recent Wairoa meeting. This season this gelding has won no fewer than seven of his 13 starts, and all of the successes have been secured on the coast. Native Chief, who also carries the same colours, is another smart performer round the smaller meetings, NOT RUN A BAD RACE The withdrawal of Salutation from the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton was due to muscular trouble which came on her at Trentliam. Salutation was not at her best when she was beaten into fourth place in the Nursery Handicap at Trenhtam following a second placing to Burra Sahib in the Wellington Stakes. A grey filly by Theio from Queen's Salute, and owned by Mr H. D. Greenwood, Salutation has not run a bad race this season. Her only win was in the Dominion Handicap at Wingatui in October, but her second placing in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton and other minor placings have brought her earnings up to £455. ALL IRISH LOOKING WELL The well-known jumper All Irish, winner of the last Great Northernl and Winter Steeples, who was recommissioned at the beginning of the month by M, O'Connor, is being allotted light tasks, at Ellerslic. He has come in from his spell, which extended over several months, looking in great order. A feature about his ajjpearance is the fact that his legs are particularly clean considering the great amount of racing he has had over obstacles. This horse should be just as good as ever during the coming winter. WORKING WELL Few horses at E'ilerslie have been working better than Glen Abb, and he has also been shaping very encouragingly in his trials over hurdles. Glen Abb figures among the nominations for hurdle events at the Waikato meeting, and his showing at thatj fixture should give a good line as to his future prospects.

PROGRESSING SATISFACTORILY

Thq two-year-old Our Gold lias been making satisfactory progress at Ellerslie and promises to develop into a useful sort. She is by Cajstain Bunsby from Gold Money, and therefore is a half-sister to First Gold Money and Gold Money Song.

NOT BEEN UP LONG Although Vahnint has not bean up very long', he is getting through a lot of useful work and is steadily improving in condition. He is one of our best gallopers under easy track conditions and he should again show to advantage during the autumn and winter. FRESHENED UP During the last couple of weeks Sir Cameiron has freshened up very noticeabty, and although he has not been required to do any galloping, he is thriving on the work that has been allotted to him. This three-year-old showed excellent form in the spring, and it looks as though he will return to his best again during the autumn. TAKEN UP AGAIN Right Royal has been taken up again by I. Tuckcr at Ellerslie, and as he comes to hand quickly he should not need a great deal of work to again strike racing condition. As Right Royal is a proficient jumper and possesses abundance! of pace, there should be plenty of races to suit him later on.

WITHOUT BIAS ON THE LOCAL GREENS RETURNED SOLDIERS' TOURNEY Week-end bowling included a Progressive Pairs Tournament amongst Returned Soldiers from Taneatua, Edgecumbe, Thornton and Whakatane held on the Whakatane Bowling Club's greens. The tournament was for a new trophy presented.by Mr A, Hayter lor annual competition and to be held by the winning skip, who after some very keen and interesting games proved to be H. Foster of Taneatua. He tied with J. Warnar and L. Luxton with 4 wins each and won the play-ofT.

The winner of the Leads Section was G. Otley who left nothing {to chance by winning all 5 games, an exceptionally meritorious performance, R. Dines being the runner-up with 4 wins.

Two tankards were very generously presented to the "Diggers'" for this tourney by a donor who wished to remain anonymous, these to remain the property of the two winners. The trophies were presented by the Bowling Club's vice-president, L. Littlejohn, and the successful players responded with a few well chosen remarks, Harry Foster expressing his appreciation of the generosity of both Mr Hayter and t.he giver of the Tankards. George Otley obviously speaking under great stress, modestly thanked the respective skips for piloting him through to ultimate victory.

A very enjoyable afternoon was concluded with three hearty cheers for the winners.
