SHORT SESSION <r«t FEW CASES FOR HEARING Had it not been for one defended case the sitting of the Magistrate's Court held yesterday would have been completed in the morning, the list of .cases for hearing being exceptionally small. Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., presided. The Police proceeded against Noran Makan, an Indian, who was charged with taking liquor into a , Maori pa. Mr Otley appeared for the accused entering a plea of guilty and stating that Makan had been a resident of the district for 19 3 r earS and had hot been before the court previously. A fine of £2 with costs 18s was imposed. Inspector J. H. Delves, of the Transport Department, had two cases* both of speeding. Francis W. Malaquin was a second offender for speeding on a motor cycla and his penalty was £3 with costs 12s. Ai first offence of speeding cost Athol H. Caraway £1 with costs 10s. Civil List. The plaintiff was awarded judgment by default in the following undefended cases.— Warwick H. Wilson v E. G. Barclay, claim £33 Os Bd, costs £4 8s 6d* C. S. Armstrong v E. C. Barclay, claim £7 10s lid, costs £1 10s 6d; Commissioner of Taxes v W. J. Ari-» sell, claim £26 3s 3d, costs £2 6s; Commissioner of Taxes v Tui Hunt, claim £3 12s 3d, costs 10s; Max Hunt v Te Iveepa Tawhio, claim £2 12s 4d, costs £1 16s 6d; A. S. C. Cruse and Charles Cruse v Howell Bros., claim £70 10s 3d, costs £6 10s. Judgment Summonses.

Hamill Bros v Samuel Houhua, claim £21 14s 7d. Ordered to payamount owing in default 21 days in Whakatane Police) gaol, warrant tar be suspended so long as defendant paid £3 per calendar month.

Wheeler's Garage v Koata Rota, claim £25 5s 7d. Debtor did not. appear and was ordered to pay amount owing forthwith, in default 25 days.in Whakatane gaol. Defended Case. Harold Stephen Mexted (Mtr o<t-t ley) confessed liability for claim of £24 5s by William Bootliby (Mr Barry) and entered a counter claims for £23 12s 6d covering work which h(?_alleged should have been done but which had been neglected by Boothby who was employed by him as a sharemiJker. Judgment was awarded for the counter claim to the extent of £19 10s with costs £3 12s Od.
