TOWN PLANNING
NEED IN WHAKATANE REMARKS AT BOROUGH COUNCIL That the time had arrived when the Council would have to consider investing in some scheme of town planning was the* opinion expressed by Hiis Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) at th 6 monthly meeting of the Council held on Monday night. A great deal of good could be done if the Council had some form of plan, he said, and future subdivision could be so investigated as to obviate difficulties that had been experienced in the past.
The setting up of residential building zones, and the control of the class of- buildings erected were points that the Mayor considered required close vfatching. He' pointed out that at present houses were being built by one contractor whichwere no ornament and no advertisement for the town. At present these were being built on cheap sections a fair distance from the town, but there was no knowing when they might be brought closer.
"There is the danger that this 1 class of shack will be built in localities where now there is a good class of houses," continued Mr Barry, "and we should see what can be done in regard to obtaining some Wxlified scheme of town planning. We should have some control over the subdivisionis and the class of buildings." These views were supported by Cr S. S. Shapley and other members, while Cr A. J. Canning spoke strongly on the need for town planning at the Maori pa and the Heads# stating that this section of the town was a standing disgrace.
It is probable that in the near fu-
ture the possibility of obtaining some scheme of town planning will be investigated.
