WHAT WILL AJAX BRING AT, AUCTION?
PRELIMINARY TO RETIREMENT TO STUD
Before lie goes to the stud next season Ajax, best Australian racehorse since Phar Lap, is to be offered at auction. This is necessary under conditions of the will of Mr E. L. Baillieu, who owned a tTiird interest in, Ajax at the time of his death. With a little luck Ajax would have Avon the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies. After interference he was beaten a length by Avenger in the A.J.C. Derby, and by half a head by Hua in the Victoria Derby. Success in these would have brought his winnings to nearly £50.000.

I the course with the huge weight for his age of 9.0. He also Avon the last three Futurity Stakes, one of Australia's greatest tests of a thoroughbred sprinter, because of the high class opposition and Avelter-Aveights. In 1938 he won Avith 9G as a three year old, in 1930, hock deep in mud, Avitli 10.fi, and last year, Avith 10.5, in 1.24 for the sca'cii furlongs. Ajax held various records on Melbourne courses, but all have been beaten since. Noav he shares only in the mile record for Randwick, 1.35% Ajax is likely to command a big stud fee Avhen lie retires to the paddock.
Mr Thompson, one of the oAvners, naturally, is keen to get him for his Kerrabec Stud, at Widden.
The Welkin was advertised at the highest fee ever asked in Australia —lOOgns.
Valais stood at 250gns per service, but two had to be booked.
Heroic's fee was also 250gns,
It is probable that a substantia bid will be required to buy Ajax s<i,ys the Sydney Sun.
His sire, Heroic, brought 16,000 gns as a racehorse, and his grandsire, Valais, .i proved sire of winners in the middle of his stud career, brought 11, 400gns.

Ajax is fourth to Phar Lap. Amounis and Gloaming on Australia's list of stake-winners. He won £40,125 in stakes for 36 wins, six
seconds and two thirds
He was unplaced only once
That was when he finished a close fourth to Hua, Caesar and Nightguard in the Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington in February, 1937.
However, he beat these horses by five lengths less than a month later in the A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes at Rand wick.
Wife's Tragic End in Battle. Hine-i-Turama';; end was tragic. She Mas onj a visit to n. daughter who lived at Orakau, in the Upper Waikato, and she went into the pa built there in the war of 1864. When the Orakau Pa was rushed by the British troops on the third day of the siege she was bayoneted to death and was one of the raany buried on the battlefield.
