DIGGER'S NERVE

"TOUCHED FOR A QUID"
Before he had been amongst his troops more than five minutes. Major General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., w*as "stung'" for £1, according to the story told by a Christchurcli soldier invalided home from Egypt.
When General Freyberg arrived at the New Zealanders' camp, said the narrator, his car was immediately surrounded by troops eager to see their O.C. When he inquired of some of those nearest how things were, one "Digger" pipe up: "Not so good, sir;* got no money."
"I suppose you would like me to offer a loan?" inquired Major-Gen-eral Freyberg, gently ironical.
"Well, sir, I.could do with a quid if you can spare it," responded the "Digger," shoving his hand forward; and Major-Geneial Freyberg produced his wallet and handed over a £1 note.
