NO DECISION YET
Although the Public Works Department's Purchase Officer is investigating possible sites for the new Whakatane "Post Office no definite decision lias been reached.
The Harbour Board which has had considerable correspondence with the officer regarding the % acre of its* property suggested as being required for the .building, has intimated to the Department that if it wishes to annex the section in question the Board is agreeable to it doing so in accordance with its powers under the Act. The Department's Purchase Officer is expected to call at Whakatane later in the year and until such time the matter is being left in abeyance. "We are quite agreeable to meet the Government in a willing spirit if it is decided that the Board's property is considered the most suitable site for the new building," said the chairman. "We are not concerned with the location of the site— that is a matter for the public generally and are not seeking a large profit if a sale is to be made, although, of course, we must at all times consider our ratepayers."
Some years ago the Harbour Board offered, the Government a section for the purpose of building a post office, this now being occupied by three shops' at the cast end of the Strand, but the offer was declined. The section now suggested as a site for the proposed new building is one which lias been reclaimed by the Board at considerable expense and from which-it draws-a very satis-
