Not Ready. In appearance at Matamata Gold Vaals looked an improved contestant when he competed at Parawai. where his best performance was to run third over seven furlongs. Nevertheless it was rather surprising to find him heavily backed on the totalisator and many must have expected him to make a very great improvement to run out ten furlongs in Cup co ni])any with 9.0 up. NOTES AND COMMENTS On the Light Side. The Bronze Kagle. gelding Fairfield made his re-appearance in the Railway Hack at Matamata. In condition he was decidedly on the light side, and although piloted by Wiggins, finished well back. The Matamata Cup. One that should have been suited by the slow pace in* the early stages of the Matamata Cup was the Opotiki trained Sir Robin, ridden by V. Dye at 7.4}4. He never flattered tlie hopes of his supporters but may do better in races up to a mile. Kaspian Returns. After a long extended holiday the j Vaals —Light Step representative.! Kaspian, made his reappearance at' Matamata on Saturday with the colours up. Ridden by R. Home, he ran a fair race in the Railway Hack, and may. be expected to be well in the money dining the country circuit meetings. Trophy for Trainer. A trophy valued at twenty guineas is to be allotted the trainer who scores the most points at the Rangitikei Club's two meetings this season. At the spring fixture D. Marks secured 8 points, W. Thompson 0, E. Watson 5 and P. Hazel man, B. Miorris, F. McHugh and W. Rayner 3 each. Coronation Again Withdrawn. The Limond—Jewel of Asia representative, Coronation, was expected to make his first appearance* this season Walton Handicap mata. but was withdrawn during the afternoon. He is a stable companion to Pern, Avinner of the Matamata Cup, so when he does make his appearance in public he will again attract keen attention. Maidten Hacks.
The entry of maiden hacks at practically all the provincial meetings
is still on the increase. At Matamata on Saturday, the parade of those in the birdcage prior to the Hinuern Handicap attracted considerable attention. They numbered 20 and among those likely ta be profitable propositions in the future may be Bevace, Sharmin, Vaalsmac, Marinoto, Archangel, and Sporting Ace. Still Speedy. Although just a little above himself in respect to perfect racing condition Farland gamely fought out the issue with the improved Noitaro in the Waharoa Handicap on Satui--day. He will be all the better for the gallop, and naturally will be much fancied by the public in liis next outing at To Rapa. On this course he has had quite a series of victories, and certainly runs his best races there. RACING FIXTURES
