APPEA L WITHOUT RESULT

"I cannot understand what is Avrong with the people," stated Superintendent F. H. Stewart yesterday when reporting that no response had been made to his appeal for recruits for the Fire Service Department of the Emergency Precautions Scheme. Superintendent Stewart recently attended a conference at Wellington of all Fire Superintendents at which arrangements: Avere'finalised for the formation of this important department of the Dominion's emergency organisations and in an article in last Monday's BEACON his appeal for recruits Avas given publicity.

The requii'emcnts are for mem£»ers of the community Avishing to serve with the Emergency Precau-

tions to join the Fire Department as auxiliary firemen or fire police. They Avill be given an efficient train ing in this important work and called upon in the event of an emergency. EA T ery day the importance of such duties is brought to mind Avhen it is read of the splendid national service being rendered by the similar service in Great Britain. There the Avork is of vital importance, and it is only by the AA'onderfully Avilling and heroic spirit of the people Avho serve in this department, that a great deal of life and property has been saved. To be prepared in NeAV Zealand is equalled necessary and the opportunity is/noAV offered for residents of Whakatane to train jand become eilicient in this AA r ork of National importance.
