STATE HOUSES

THE DOMINION TOTAL NKARIXG THE 10,000 MARK By about the middle of next month the Housing Construction De partment expects that the Dominion total of completed State houses, will be over 10,000. The demand still greatly exceeds the supply, and there is no sign yet of applications for houses decreasing. On the contrary, the position seems to be that as more of the houses are completed the greater becomes the list of applicants.

The December figures showing the total number of applicants all over New Zealand for Stale houses are not yet available, but when the Minister of Housing, Mr Armstrong, opened the block of Slate Hats at Berhamporc at the beginning of last November, he said that there were 21,818 people on the Availing, list at that time. There is every reason to believe, in view of past experience, that since then this lot<\l has grown, even thou-gh more houses have been completed. The total number of houses completed by the Housing Department throughout New Zealand as at January 17 last was 9728, and tlicrc were an additional 2f>2o houses in course of construction, making a total of 12,313.
