PUBLIC APATHY
OHOPE CONVENIENCES UNCARED FOR • COUNCIL'S CRITICISM Strong reference was made to the lack of appreciation shown by the public in regard to the Centennial Memorial bathing sheds at Ohope beach at yesterday's meeting of the Whakatane County Council, when many instances of careless or thoughtless treatment of the conveniences were quoted. It was stated by Cr H./ C. Mc Cready, in a report, that he had found the sheds left in. a dirty condition, doors left unlocked and generally a lack of decent care shown by users. The women's quarters had been mostly ill-used, probably owing to the possibility that more children visited that section. The practice of preventing the doors from locking so that the penny-in-the-slot would not require to be used by others, was prevalent. Other members also related instances where the conveniences had. been flagranlly uncared for, ami it was felt that the only solution would be to have a full-time caretaker employed during the holiday season. One cause of annoyance was that water taps in the dressing sheds were left lunning so that the rooms became flooded. Unfortunately patent taps, which would, guard against such nuisance, were unavailable. ,*'lt is up to the public to look after its own property," said the chairman, Cr J. L. Burnett, when expressing the hope that in future the users of che rooms would lie more thoughtful.
