RACING NOTES
Purchased Half-interest. I The Flaxmerc stud master, Mr F. , B. Donnelly., lias bought ii halfshare in the stallion, Robin Goodfellow, and the four brood mares recently purchased in England, they ■will all go to Mr Donnelly's stud on arrival in New Zealand. Should Make Good. Since becoming a member ol R. 11. Martin's team at Matamata the three year old filly Sharmin, has shown decided improvement. In the Kopu Handicap at the Thames meeting she ran a very meritorious second to Royal Son. She was in the light all the way and finished in. the gamest manner. A Disappointment. Produced in the pink of condition The Buzzard —Cullort four year old colt, Pern, trained by Fred Davis, at Matamata, failed in the Goldfield's Cup and President's Handicap and on each occasion showed but little inclination to light the issues out. When he ran second to* Our Jean in the Waikato Cup last November he showed good promise, but has since been a disappointment.
Sir Robin Scores. Mention was made this month in i this column to the Opotiki trained Merry Vaals being on the easy list, and that the Opotiki stable presided over hy M. B. Abbott biiriging out Sir Robin to take his place with the colours up. At the Thames meeting Sir Robin secured a clear cut victory, in the Parawai Handicap. Ridden by Vic Dye he scampered over the six furlongs in 1.13 l-ssecs, so should again be in the money
before long. Retired from the Turf. When the Te Aioha owned Golden Sheila competed in the Goldgekl's Cup, carrying top weight in a field of eleven good handicap performers, she ran her last race with the colours up. This handsome chestnut mare, was ever a model of consistency, and could gallop fast and stay well. She was bred bv Mr L.
S. Otwav, of Cambridge, and purchased as a yearling by Mr 13.'l 3 .' A. Swney, and i n the season 1939-40 ranks as the best handicap mare in the Dominion. Ajax Retired. The retirement of Ajax was announced last week by his part owner, Mr A. W. Thompson. Ajax will begin his first season at the stud later in the year. Mr Thompson said the horse had developed soreness again, and it had been decided that no risks be taken with- him. Ajax earned £40,275 in prize money; and is fourth on the list of stakes winners in Australia, He has beei* out of a place only once in 40 races. He had .36 wins, seven seconds and
two thirds. Spoiled his Chance. The Matamata hack Lord Ace, made his first and only appearance at the Thames meeting in the Farewell Handicap .. Little fault could I be found in respect to his racing condition, but apparently he felt just a little too well, for even with G. Cameron in the saddle he dashed away for his preliminary and practically bolted a mile and a half before being pulled up. Needless to relate he'was not especially prominent in the actual contest. Howcvei, he has previously shown galloping capability, and now behaves in a more exemplary manner. racing fixtures
