VITAL STATISTICS

INCREASE IN BIRTHS

The registrar, (Mr Morgan) furnishes returns of vital statistics for the year ended December 31, 1940* as follows, figures for the previous twelve months being shown in parentheses:— Births. European 188 (156) | Maori 29 (10) Deaths, European 48 (41) Maori 12 (2) Marriages. Etiropean 80 (60) The Native figures appear to be extraordinarily low, but the reason for this is that districts in close proximity to the town have their' own registrars and no record is kept locally.
