PIAKO FEDERATION
FINAL PAYMENT MADE / £29,272 as 3d FOR THE SEASON' The "final payment for bobby calves supplied during the season, has now been made, stated the chair man, Mr E. Palliser, of Springdale. The amount distributed (including the affiliated Waihi District Calf » Pool) is £16,410 Is fid. > An advance payment of £13,8625 ' Js 9d was made in September, making a total payment for the season of £29,272 3s 3d. For the season ended 3rd December, 1940, the number of calves handled was 67,058, an increase of 1559 on last season's collections of 65,49.9 calves. Although it appeears that a number of additional heifer calves has been retained during the season, the increase in calves slaughtered may be attributed to the fact that at great percentage of bull calves has been produced and owing to the better climate conditions there has been less mortality. The calves on the average are heavier than for last season and the condemned percentages is only .64 per cent compared with 1.47 per cent last year. The Federation again affiliated with Waikato Federated Calf Pools for the more efficient handling of products and general' matters in connection with the industry. This organisation lias disposed of 193,665 calves for the season to date. Prices for veal and calf sundries} were fixed throughout the season, but owing to the loss of European markets the skin prices were very erratic. The same rate of payment is made to suppliers for early and late calves and the present distribution includes a bonus on calves supplied to 27th August and full payment on calves supplied thereafter. The minimum live weight at which calves were collected in the Piako district was 50 lbs, but at Tahuna which conveys the calves direct to the'works by road, they were collected at 49 lbs. At Waihi 51 lbs was the fixed weight owing to the longer railage. A uniform rate of payment per pound live weight in each area was made to suppliers, no distinction being made for calves collected under 51 lbs. Summary of Payments.
