SIXTY FOOT GEYER

SPECTACLE AT RUATOKI

BRIEF EARTHQUAKE FREAK

An interesting tale lias now come from Ruatoki, where the force of the recent severe earth quake jolt was felt to a greater extent than elsewhere. This con-

cerns a spectacular phenomenon which took place near the er, in the shape of a sixty foot geyser which played for approxi mately an hour and was seeri by dozens of residents.

According to one observer,, the remor had no sooner ceased than

a great crack was seen to open on the high banks near the river op-> posite Mr Jim Riini's property, and from it gushed the water apparent!ly under great subterannean pressure. The fountain did not assume a single jet but rather spread like a wall of spray the highest isoint of which was estimated to reach sixty feet; The flow was particularly strong but declined in a series of lesser gushes as it finally subsided after giving an hour's entertainment to the large assembly gathered to watch it. The observers all agree that the water was not hot,, and appeared to have the semblance of ordinary river water.
