CONSERVING MATERIAL NEW BUILDING REGULATIONS PERMITS FOR HOUSES COSTING OVER £2000 | j The Building Controller fromi I the Ministry of Supply has notified the Whakatane Borough) J Council that undfer the new Building Regulations no local Authority shall issue a building permit for constructional work which will utilise more than half a ton of structural steeK* or cost in excess of £2000, U'n j less previous consent had been given from the Ministry Further all local authorities arc required to furnish monthly reports of all permits which have been issued, and in cases where" the Building By-laws impose a time limit, this must be suspended while the matter is under consideration by the Government. The Controller sought co-operation in order that the scheme might be successfully introduced to the best advantage and in the interests of the Dominion's War effort. A Special Staif. "We'll have to put on a special staff to cope with all these new Government regulations," said the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry. Cr Sullivan agreed that the restrictions were probably necessary., but that to his mind consent should be gained before anything binding was entered into between contractor and builder. A contractor who had submitted a price and then had to await the pleasure of the Ministry of Supply for a few months, would have to reconsider his price for the cost of materials was moving all the time, and no contractor would put himself in that l position. In Australia, said Cr Sullivan, the limit had been set at £5000, but in the Dominion it had been cuc to less than half. However if prices went ahead as they had been, it would not' be long before it Avoi|d cost £2000 to build a house at all in this country. Choking Industry. He recognised the need to conserve metals at the present time,, but pointed out that the building industry represented a large number of Avorkers and constituted a very important item as far as the country's income Avas concerned. The more restrictions Avere imposed the more that industry Avas going to be hampered, and the more people were likely to be sloAved up. The Mayor: "The regulations have been passed.
