PARAVANES FOR SHIPS

AUSTRALIAN SHIPS TO BE EQUIPPED

All ships engaged in the Australian* coastal trade must in future be equipped with paravanes—devices for sweeping mines in the course of the vessel-—-before they put to sea. This is an important step in protecting shipping from enemy mines, which have destioyed a number of ships recently oft the Australian coast. By an order published recently, the Chief or the Naval Staff. Sir Ilngnar Colvin. states that a ship registered in Australia and engaged in coastal trade shall not without the permission ol' the Chiel of the Naval Staff, put to sea from any port whether within or outside the Commonwealth unless the ship is equipped with paravanes to the satisfaction of himself or his deputed officer. Paravanes ar j devices which towed beneath the water by cable from the bow of the vessel, sweep the vessel's course. Cutting edges on the paravane slash the mine from its mooring cable and cause it to rise to the surface, where it is deI stroyed.
