GIRL'S ROOM ENTERED
OPOTIKI MAORI CHARGED SIX MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT Seven further charges were brought against Thomas Tamati, a Maori aged 26, a labourer of Msremere, who appeared again > before Messrs W. T. Burrett and C. Pipe, J.P's. The charges against accused were: On November 27 at Omaio he Avas deemed to be a rogue and vagabond in that he was found by night without lawful excuse in a building, the residence of James Hudson. On November 28 he was found by night without lawful excuse in the enclosed yard of the residence of James Hudson. On November 27 at Waiawa he stole one hat and one scarf. On October 25 at Upper Waiawa he stole 20s in money and six tins of tobacco valued at 12s. On November 25 at Upper Waiawa he stole a pair of leggings valued at lis, a pair of spurs valued at 5s and a tin of tobacco avlued at 2s. On October 27 at Upper Waiawa he wilfully caused unnecessary suffering to a horse. On December 20 he unlawfully converted a horse to his own use. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges and elected to be dealt with summarily. Sergeant J. Isbister, who conducted the case on behalf of the police, sitated that with reference to the breaking into Hudson's house, accused and two other youths, who would later appear before the court* went to a window and accused wer-t into the girl',3 room. The girl became alarmed and roused the household, accused making his escape. On the following night accused again went into the room, and before the girl awoke he cut the electric light cord.
The Bench commented that accused appeared to be a very bad man and had rendered himself liable to a long term of imprisonment. How-
