WELCOME RAIN

HEAVY FALLS IN DISTRICT

FOUR i INCHES AT EDGECUMBE'

The rain which commenced falling last Friday morning, did not let up till in the early hours on Sunday, when it was followed by Jbrilliantly fine weather. Though Whakatane was well drenched the Plain§ from reports) to hand received a much heavier fall. The rain was most welcome and as one district farmer put it, was worth many thou sands of pounds to who were watching with no little apprehension the steady decline of their returns during the past week or two. This was not to say, he explained, that the season was to be regarded in any other light than a most favourable one, but he maintained, Jiad the dry spell continued only a few weeks longer it would have had disastrous results. The fall in Whakatane till Saturday measured 2.26 inches but that at Edgecumbe was over twice as great, being 4.66 inches and was unaccompanied by the steady boisterous winds which whipped up the heavy seas off the harbour and beaches. Tides at Ohope ran high, and the seas lapped the lupins for the first time in many months. There was a steady exodus of camp ers from the beach over the weekend and it is no exaggeration to say that fully 50 per cent of those under canvass packcd up and took to the road on Sunday. The holiday population in houses and baches however remains practically the same.
