Apple Blossom in January. A siprig of apple blossom picked from an apple tree 011 the Rangitaiki Plains duiing the week-end was brought to the Beacon Office this morning as evidence of the effect of the long spell of warm weather. The tree, ffhich thought a second spring was here,, is hearing ripening fruit. Left Behind. Life in Fiji induces a kind of general "laziness" which, caused by the climate, manifests itself in such ways as a disinclination to walii fast. A New Zealander who has returned on holiday after four years in Fiji, said that on his arrival in the Dominion he noticed how fast everyone seemed to be walking. Not infrequently he found himself being left behind. Edgecumbe Rainfall. Mr A. McLean reporting on the rainfall for the past month of December as taken from measurements at Edgecumbe,, stales in a communication that it amounted to 2.77 inches. The total for the year was 54.96 inches, the highest fall being recorded in January, last (10.3 ins) and the lowest in March (l.Olin).
"No Stockings" Brigade. Several shops and-, offices have given permission for their girls to come to work without stockings. A welcome move to the girls these hot days. Some of course will find it difficult to depart i'rom fixed ideas. Landted! There was no more surprised person in Whakatane last Thursday than a certain shop assistant,, w,ho when the 'quake occurred had barely got over the shock when a tier of straw hats from a top shelf landed neatly on his head.
