CRICKET SELECTION

Sir* —In Wednesday's "Beacon" you published the Rangitaiki Cricket Association's representative team to play Rotorua. Among those selected! is the name of one member who has not played a game this season and, in fact, is not even attached *Jto a Club. Surely the rules of the Association must have been stretched considerably! to allow such an,,unusual method of selection." I definitely submit that the Association is wide open for strong criticism, from the fact that any team playing the eleven chosen could win on a protest without the slightest doubt. More than ever these days, it is necessary to keep sport going, but if teams are selected in such a haphazard manner, and players who have turned out regularlyi in Club competitions, find themselves stood down for one who has not played one Club match, then I suggest that future prospects will be far from bright. In any case, a player of such calibre should be taking an active! part in the sport, and the Association also, should "have made every endeavour to have retained his ser* vices, particularly if—as is apparently the case—he was available for representative honours, and his 1 selection was a foregone conclusion. Cricket is 'ike anything else; run it "according to Hoyle" 1 and it will' survive, but "mess abaht" with thei recognised laws and regulations, to suit special local conditions, and you find yourself face to face with trouble. This also is a recognised fact, gained from experience. Yours etc*, 'A SUPPORTER OF CRICKET/
