MAAKA— STEWART
A quiet but pretty wedding ofi local interest took place at Taupo last Thursday afternoon, the 2nd Jail uary, 1941, when Florance Ramar? Oliphant, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A. O. Stewart of Whakatane, was married to Dr. G. Hk Maaka of Taneat.ua, eldest son of Mrs A. Maaka of Hastings.
The marriage was arranged to take place at Taupo in order to suit the convenience ot some of the relatives of the bridegroom who desired to be present. , The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Van Beck.
The bride made a charming pic-* ture as she appeared on the arm of her father in her beautiful wedding gown of magnolia embossed satin with its long trailing train and. silk, tulle bridal veil falling in showers from a halo with orange blosstori| each side over all. She carried fat bouquet of cream and white glad--ioli, asparagus and maiden hair ferns with streamers of cream satin ribbons. The bride's sister,, Miss Rowena Oliphant Stewart, acted 1 as> bridesmaid, and wore a frock, of shell pink georgette with a halo of pink for-get-me-nots on her head. She also wore a necklace of pearls and earrings to match, the gift of the bride groom, and carried a.bouquet o>f pink gladioli and maiden hair fern. Also in attendance, was little Therese Rice, who looked charming as the flower girl in her white crinoline lAe frock with her basket of beautiful flowers. All the - bouquets and basket of flowers were artistically arranged; by Mrs O. Rice of Taneatua, who was also present at the wedding.. She wore an armlet of platinum; studded with jewels. The bridegroom was attended by his brother,,. Mr Derek. Maaka,, as best man and by the bride's brother, 2nd Lieut. D. 0. Stewart ast groomsman. After the ceremony, a reception was held' in the tea rooms overlooking the shores of the Taupo Lake, where Mrs A. O. Stewart received her guests wearing an ensemble of petunia crepe icmaine with black hat to tone and carried a bouquet to tone. The bridegroom's 1 mother,, Mrs Maaka, who assisted Mrs Stew}art,, wore an ensemble of black and white silk with hat to match. The usual toasts and speeches were given, and after the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" the bridal party and guests repaired to the residence cf Mir and Mrs R. Oakes:, where a musical programme was enjoyed by all. For the commencement of the honeymoon tour, the bride wore a frock of powder blue ripple georgette with turban and accessories to match.
