PRESENTATION TO MR R. FERRY ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION'S TRIBUTE On the eve of his departure to join the R.N.Z.A.F., Mr Ray Ferry was the recipient of a leather travelling companion, the gift of the St. John Ambulance Association. In making 'the presentation, Mr A. J. Canning, chairman of the Association, said "Mr "Ferry' iiatl periormed valuable service in conducting the ambulance classes for a number of years. As superintendent of the brigade he had been called out at all hours and liis spirit was appreciated by the Association, which could not allow him 1o leave without some recognition of his valuable services. "Your being called up for service in the interests of your country means a great loss to the St. John Ambulance Association in Wliakatane," said Mr Canning, "and we trust that you will be spared to return and take up the duties you have so ably p.nd faithfully carried out in the past." Dr. E. Tewslev Dawson, Medical Superintendent of the Whakatane Hospital, and who has conducted the lectures and examinations. for the St. John Ambulance Association for some years, .praised, the, good work done by Mr F'crry., who had been a power of assistance on tlie practical side of the class instruction work. ■Replying, Mr Ferry said that $he time he had put in with the Association's classes had been a pleasure. The members worked in harmony but it should not be forgotten that most of the credit went to t|he energetic secretary, Mr Harry Carr, Mr Ferry expressed thanks foi the presentation made by the Association. LEAVING FOR SERVICE TWO MEMBERS OF THE BEACON STAFF FAREWELLED Two members of the "BAY OF PLENTY BEACON" staff, Mr H. Thorburn and Mr R. Stewart, who are to enter camp with the Reinforcements, were farewelled-- at an informal gathering of the directors and staff on Friday afternoon. Mr C. Kingsley-Smith, managing- | editor, and Mr F. J. Reynolds, chairman of directors, were the prin cipal speakers. Mr Reynolds said it was realised that the boys had to go. Fighting men were needed and though the firm was sorry to lose them the loss was offset b3 r the knowledge that their services had been offered and would be used for a greater cause.

PRESENTATION TO MR DOUG. WILSON POPULAR BOROUGH EMPLOYEE Friday, afternoon was the occasion of another farewell function when His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, representing the Borough Council and employees, made a presentation of a camera to Mr Doug. Wilson, popular member of . the Borough office staff. Mr Wilson will encamp with the Fifth Reinforcements.
