East Coast Railway. If progress continues at the rate maintained recently by the gangs at both faces of the' big TikiwhataWaiau tunnel on the East Coast main trunk railway route, the last of the rock between the faces will be broken down late in February, it is now expected. This tunnel, last and biggest of the three main works on the Gisborne-Waikokopo section, is also the last "of the principal obstacles to through travel over-the line from Gisborne to Napier. Cal j 'culations affecting the progress! of work on the line during the next year must take into account the possibility of the war seriously disturbing the present organisation. Granting that there will be no such contingencies to face, it is likely that the last section of the East Coast main trunk line will be handed over to the 1 New Zealand Railways Department late in 1941.
