The Finance Committee's recorrimendation Avas that a igrant of £10 be made forthwith on account of a grant limited to £25, the sum suggested in the letter. The council was of the opinion 'that the responsibility should be met by the Government. Local "Bodiesshould not be called upon to contribute towards the defence ■of the country. The decision to ■write to the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, to this effect, was confirmed by the full council .-at its meeting yesterday.
