WHAKATANE'S RHODES SCHOLAR FUNCTION AT THE SCHOOL During the fair staged in the,, Whakatane .School grounds - yesI terday opportunity was taken i to make several presentations toi Mr Alan Stewart, B.Ag'.Sc.j., who gained one of the two Rhodes Scholarships awarded . this year. Mr Stewart, son of Mr and Mrs K. Stewart,, Hillcrest, attended the Whakatane). School for four years. Mr G. C. Soutliey, headmaster, congratulated Mr Ste>vart upon his success and referred to the reflection' on the school. The Rev; S." G. Caul ton/, chairman 'of the 'School Committee, also, expressed the school's pride in Mr Stewart's achievement. His Worship the INlayor, Mr B. S. Barry, voiced the borough's congratulations and hopes for Mr Stewart's continued success. Mr Barry made presentations on -behalf of the Borough Council and the Patriotic Committee and present actions were also made by the past and present pupils. In replying Mr Stewart said his success was due mainty to his parents, who had given him all assistance and encouragement, and to the teaching staff. of the Whakatane School. Mr Stewart is to report to. HJVLS* Philomel, the Auckland naval base, on Wednesday, and it is understood that he will proceed to England for training for a commission in the Royal Navy.
