APPRENTICES

RESTRICTIONS RELAXED PROTECTION OF EMPLOYER The relaxation of apprenticeship restrictions was briefly discussed at a recent meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The secretary said the chamber, acting with the Manufacturers' and Employers' Association, had made representations to the Minister ior Labour for authority to lie given for certain relaxation of the restrictions to enable unskilled workers to be trained. Tho present provision protected only the employee in cases where lie wanted his employment reinstated. The chamber wanted the employer to be protected to. take on extra unskilled labour when he was deprived of his skilled workers. Mr S. O. Dillon, whose views had been stated in a letter to the Associated Chambers, said the Labour Department should have authority to investigate and decide each case on its merits when manufacturers were up against shortage of labour for production.
