NEW POST OFFICE SITE
Sjir,——l. see reported that the Cham ber of Commerce has .deckled td ask the Postmaster-General to procure -the site known as the Civic Buildings for the new post office. Is this not a mistake? I also see that it was mentioned at the meeting that the P.W.D. had already approached the Harbour Board- with the object of securing a site-at the corner of Street and the Strand the Rock. This, site is ideal . for Whakatane's post office and is a better one than the Civic Buildings. When the Postmas-i ter-General and the official for the; P.W.D. visited Whakatane (not long, ago) they no doubt went into the question of site very carefully'and decided that the Rock site was the most suitable. .To my mind there , is no doubt about it. There is one point that we are all agreed upon and that is, it would be "unwise to spend twenty thousand or more on the present post office. Whakatane is a fast growing town and I predict that in another ten or twelve years will be double its size. The only way it can move or grow is soutli towards Apanui and King Street and the site at' the Rock will -no doubb be! very much more-central than at the Civic Buildings. So now let us notify the Post-master-General that tlie site. at the Rock is the right, spot and commend him for his foresight and ask him to get on with the erection as quickly as possible.' v - v I - - - - , It would be interesting to see a plan of the new building. I pre« sume it is to be a, two-storey one, and with a four-sided clock on the top, oh my— Yours etc., INTERESTED.
