RACING NOTES Proud Fox in Work. Alter a lengthy respite from track \vork at Takanini, Proud Fox'. very successful performer last season, has resumed work, and it is anticipated that he may be rea;dy to race prominently at the holiday meeting at Ellerslie. Shows Improvement. Competing in the Tiri Hurdles at Ellerslie High .Star was very prominent for the greater part of the distance, his jumping being of a high standard*. It would not be at all surprising if The Ace—Star Attraction golding returns to the winning list before many weeks. Hearty ancf> Well. News from Wanganui is to the effect that the brilliant lilly Belle Cane, is all the better for her Canterbury trip. She is now being prepared for the Auckland summer meeting where she will be one oft the star attractions of the fixture.,
A Speedy One. Among the brilliant gallopers to be seen out at Ellerslie in the holiday week will, be the Theio representative, Salutation, already noted for its speed. Disappointing. Tlic Night Raid—Palcstrina horse, The Cardinal, trained at Matamata looked bright" and well when he went out to contest the Alison Cup. Although lightly handicapped, and with a course devoid of sting, he never looked a probable winner at any stage of the race. Since winning the Avondale Cup last year The Cardinal has performed disappointinglj7, and not at all in keeping with his breeding. There may, however, still be hope for him making amends as he is only a five year bid. Round Up Re-appears. After spending a racing season under the sunny skies of Australia, Round Up, for some time rankihg as Auckland's best handicap performer made a re-appearance at Ellerslie last week. He looked the picture of condition and although treated leniently by the weight adjuster, put very little vim into his galloping exhibitions, and finished among the "also started. He cannot,'however, be yet considered a back number, and by the time autumn sets in the Lord Quex gelding may again assume the winning status.
A Derby Prospect. The Gisborne owned Kincardine colt Kindergarten Avinner of the Alison Cup, is iioav regarded as a Great Northern Derby pospcct. In point of confirmation he AA'ell fills the bill, and on breeding lines ranks high especially in respect to a stayer's pedigree. His dam Valadorc is by Valkyrian—Adornment, by The Nut from Elegance, by Sea ton De] aval from Antelope from Miss Kate (imp) by- He is thus related to the great Phar Lap, Avho de>sccnded from Miss Kate consequently much will be expected from him by AAay of turf records.
The Northern Tour. Dick Percivai, of HaAvke's Bay, avc 11 knoAvn in the Auckland dis-' trict, brought up to the fixture the Hunting Song gelding Rakanui. He ay as duly sadlled up on the first day, and his avcll trained appearance resulted in the discerning public installing him a very pronounced favourite. But Rakanui. after getting aAvay badly did not at all relish the hardness of the track, and although he made a big effort rounding into the home run finished Avell back. He was then intended for Ellerslie but failing to do justice to his food bin Avas Avithdrawn from action at the Auckland meeting. Never 'despair again comes into the sporting reckoning, and Rakanui, before returning to the equitable climate of Taradale, is> expected to make good at the Waipa meeting.
